CSA Season 2011, June 29

I’m becoming quite spoiled by having a full work crew on harvest days this season. I’ve been blessed with a full set of family and friends helping to pick, wash, and deliver — all of them calling me, “Boss.” Many thanks to Christine Kramer, Aunt Kate Sunier, Tim, Cheryl, and Annie Kramer, and Cora and Stephanie Scott for their help on this most glorious of harvest days. Great pea-pickers, all of you!

Speaking of peas, these early crunchy sweet treats from the garden are in abundance this week, accompanying the rest of this week’s harvest basket:

  • arugula
  • bok choy
  • broccoli
  • chard
  • cilantro
  • garlic scapes
  • kale (Tuscan/Dinosaur/Lancinato or Curly Leaf)
  • lettuce, mesclun mix
  • lettuce, red romaine
  • snow peas
  • sugar snap peas

I always just love snow peas sauteed in soy sauce with water chestnuts, but for those of you who would like to jazz it up a bit, try this with your snow peas and cilantro!

Snow Pea Red Pepper Slaw
2 cups slivered snow peas
1 red bell pepper, matchsticked
1/2 c  fresh orange juice
2 t. sugar
1 T rice wine vinegar
1 t. ground cumin
1 T chopped cilantro
1 t. minced garlic
1/2 – 1 jalapeno, minced
salt and pepper, to taste
Toss all ingredients in a bowl. Makes 4 – 6 servings.

P.S. If you have any questions on the identification or uses of any of the items in your share, do not hesitate to let me know!
